Facts about Kennebunk, ME

Located in York County, Kennebunk is a town with a history dating back to 1621. Currently, the town is home to more than 11,500 people. There are a number of villages and newer neighborhoods that compose the town, with the Lower Village, the Landing, West Kennebunk, Kennebunk Beach, and Cheshire Commons being among the most prominent. 

Early on, the community became a key trading center for the area. Over time ship building became a main driver of the local economy. Shipping also aided in the growth of the area. 

Originally, Kennebunk was part of the neighboring towns of Wells, and Arundel. That changed in 1820, when it was formally incorporated as a separate town. 

Manufacturing expanded in the late 19th and early 20th century, bringing more people and industries to the town. More recently, it's become a popular tourist destination, offering a combination of historical sites and beautiful beaches for visitors to enjoy.
