Located in Cumberland County, Scarborough is a town found along the southern coast of Maine. It's roughly seven miles south of Portland, the capital city, and is part of the Portland–South Portland–Biddeford, Maine metropolitan statistical area. As of the 2020 census, the town's population stood at 22,135. That figure confirmed that Scarborough is the most populous town in Maine, with nearby Portland remaining the most populous city. 

The town's history begins with the establishment of a trading post in 1630, followed by a land grant issued in 1631. By the middle of the century, more than 50 homes were present. Fishing and farming opportunities helped to spur additional growth for the next two centuries. An official incorporation as a town took place in 1658. 

War later in the century leveled the town. Resettlement efforts began in 1677, but were thwarted for the better part of a decade. A truce signed in 1699 paved the way for a more successful resettlement effort beginning in 1702. 

Today, the town is home to a number of historical sites. It's also the headquarters of the Hannaford Supermarket chain. The Beech Ridge Motor Speedway is a major attraction in the area, while nearby beaches and wildlife preserves bring in a number of visitors each year.
