Biddeford's history dates back to the early 17th century. It's known as one of the oldest European settlements in what would become the United States. The city also holds the distinction of being the site of Saint Joseph's Church, one of the tallest structures in the state.
Originally, the area was incorporated as the town of Saco in 1653. That remained the case until 1855, when the city of Biddeford was formally incorporated. The two cities remain in close connection, leading to the nickname of the Twin Cities.
